HR Officer

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental organization that advances and shares scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide, and employs the resulting knowledge to generate state-of-the-art advice on meeting conservation, management and sustainability goals. ICES international network comprises more than 6000 scientists from over 700 marine institutes in our 20 member countries and beyond.

The HR Officer will join the Secretariat’s Administration Department, forming a close-knit team with the current HR Officer and Coordination Officer.  This is a diverse role, which supports all HR-related functions, including daily administration, processes and strategies concerning staff.  In this role, there are always new challenges popping up so no two days feel the same.  To be a success in this role, the HR Officer must be flexible and good at prioritizing tasks. 


The HR Officer will support the Secretariat (approximately 70 employees) by:

  • Acting as first line of support for staff issues
  • Support line managers in employee relations
  • Assisting line managers to understand and implement policies and procedures as well as being involved in the development of strategies related to staff resources
  • Maintaining relations with relevant stakeholders, including the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Executing full recruitment processes (preparing job adverts, organizing panel, checking applications, shortlisting, interviewing, and orientation)
  • Preparation and review of employment contracts for staff and external experts
  • Working towards the streamlining of administrative processes
  • Providing overall administrative support to the Management and Administration teams

Qualifications and experience

To be a success in this role, you should have:

  • Outstanding integrity and professionalism
  • Proactive approach to work, continuously seeking ways to help
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited university in a field related to human resources
  • At least 5 years’ working experience with a broad perspective of human resources
  • Excellent communication skills as well as the proven ability to thrive in a team, with colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • An eye for detail and great organization skills, with an ability to manage several tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of applications and familiarity with SharePoint
  • Exceptional English language skills as well as the ability to read and speak Danish at an intermediate level
  • Experience within the IGO sector preferred but not required

Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week), starting in January 2022 or as soon as possible. 

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system.  The salary for this role is situated at the “C6” grade.  A tax-free pension scheme is available, to which both the employee and ICES contribute.
