The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental organization which aims to advance the scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and provide information and advice on the sustainable use of the seas.
ICES Secretariat is currently in search of a Technical Officer to join the Advisory services team based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Advice team comprises 15 staff members who support the delivery of advisory products from single fish stocks to multi-species and mixed fisheries advice. The Advice team work with the Advisory Committee and the wider ICES community in order to fulfil the requests for scientific advisory services provided by ICES.
We are looking for someone with a sharp, analytical mind and excellent knowledge of statistics, data science and statistical programming languages to contribute to the provision of ICES advice products including fisheries, ecosystem services and effects. The work will entail the developments of scripts and data products, mainly within the statistical programming language R, that for example support regional assessments of benthic habitats and deep-sea vulnerable marine ecosystems and their overlap with bottom fisheries and other human activities (e.g. aggregate extraction and marine renewables).
To be successful in this role, one should possess the following competencies and experience:
Required competences and experience
- Excellent knowledge and proven experience of statistical programming languages (preferably R)
- Knowledge and experience of spatial data analysis and scripting
- Able to display data outputs with GUI tools, such as Shiny applications or leaflets
- Excellent written English and verbal communication skills
- University degree and 3-5 years of experience in a marine-related science discipline or mathematics/statistics or similar
- GIS software and integration with R
- QC/QA systems relating to data collection and analyses
- Database systems (preferably MS-SQL)
- Interest in international marine related policy and legislation
Terms of appointment
The appointment will be full-time (38 hours/week), for a 3-year period starting in December 2021, or as soon as possible.
ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salary for this role is situated at the “C6” grade which is exempt from Danish income tax and is based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system. A tax-free pension scheme is available.
