TIMES Series Editor
The International Council of the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is currently seeking a series editor for part-time work with ICES Techniques in Marine Environmental Sciences (TIMES).
ICES Techniques in Marine Environmental Sciences (TIMES) are open access and peer-reviewed manuals and protocols, written by experts in their respective fields. They offer detailed and state-of-the-art descriptions of methods and procedures across a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from chemical, physical, and biological measurements, through detailed survey protocols, to data handling and modelling. The TIMES series editor will work closely with ICES Lead Editor, and will have the following responsibilities:
- Evaluate new publication proposals for scientific quality and appropriateness for the series.
- Assess each manuscript before publication and evaluate the peer-review process.
- Keep an overview of the series with ICES Lead Editor, and identify issues, risks, and opportunities.
The volume of work varies from year-to-year but typically encompasses assessing 3-5 publication proposals per year and evaluating 2-4 manuscripts (on average 30-80 pages in length, including tables, figures and references). The anticipated turnaround after receipt is 1 week for assessing a publication proposal, and 3-4 weeks for evaluating a manuscript. You will also be expected to join quarterly (online) meetings with ICES Lead Editor.
Qualifications and Experience
For this position, we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:
- At least 5 years professional background in marine sciences. Proven experience in the development and practical application of protocols and manuals is preferred. An educational background in marine sciences or related field is a plus.
- At least 2 years' experience on a journal editorial board (or equivalent), and proven experience in peer-reviewing scientific manuscripts.
- Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals is preferred.
- Excellent English language skills.
- The ability to dedicate the necessary time.
Terms of Appointment
The period of appointment is three years, with the opportunity for extension. This is a part-time contract, with working hours varying according to the number of publications released each year.
Series editors work as external consultants and are not considered employed members of ICES Secretariat staff. You will be paid a fixed annual honorarium of 10,000 Danish kroner.
